Inukjuak chosen for site of new jail

Regional councillors chose Inukjuak as the location for Nunavik’s proposed detention centre this week during a special meeting of the Kativik Regional Government.

Officials expect the centre will create 53 jobs and bring the community both direct and indirect economic benefits.

The Nunavik Detention Centre will house 40 individuals who are either in remand or serving jail terms of less than two years.

The communities of Kuujjuaraapik, Puvirnituq, Akulivik, Salluit, Quaqtaq and Kangiqsualujjuaq also vied for the opportunity to house the centre.

The KRG said the detention centre should be ready by the end of 2005.
