Inuksuk student wins big
An Iqaluit high school student has won a prestigious federal scholarship for his volunteer activities.
Brendan Doherty, who graduates this month from Inuksuk High School, received a Millennium Scholarship Foundation excellence award, worth up to $16,000 during his four years at university.
Foundation officials said they chose Doherty from thousands of applicants because of his dedication to “make the world a better place”. Over the years, Doherty has volunteered for the Kamatsiaqtut Baffin Crisis Line, the Rotary Club, and helped organize a benefit concert to raise $1,950 for AIDS relief in Africa.
Doherty gets $4,000 cash this year, and potentially more, depending on his grades.
