The City of Iqaluit has cancelled all activities that were scheduled for the Arnaitok Arena over the weekend.

The arena will be closed on Aug. 26 and 27 for repairs and maintenance to the facility, the city said in a public service announcement Thursday.

The arena, originally built in the 1970s, was described in March 2022 by the city’s recreation director Stephanie Clark as “still functioning, but … aging.”

In 2022, council discussed plans for a series of upgrades. In January, councillors approved a $24,000 contract as a step on the path toward replacing its washrooms and lobby.

Earlier this year, city council pushed back plans to replace the facility’s ice plant to 2024 after a bid to do the work came in at more than double the city’s $950,000 budget.
