Joanasie Akumalik, who had been an Iqaluit city councillor for nearly 10 years, has resigned from council.

He submitted his resignation on Wednesday evening, the city announced Thursday in a news release. It thanked him for his service, describing him as a “well-known elder and longtime resident of Iqaluit.”

In an email to Nunatsiaq News, city spokesperson Aleksey Cameron said Akumalik’s resignation letter did not provide a reason for his decision to leave council.

Akumalik had been a city councillor since 2013 and works for Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. as the Nanilavut Project manager.

He declined a request for an interview about his resignation.
