As summer approaches and last winter’s litter resurfaces from the snow melt, the City of Iqaluit is inviting residents to take part in the annual community cleanup this Friday.
Residents can pick up garbage anywhere in the city, whether it is near their home, workplace or in any other public area.
Garbage bags and gloves are available at the Unnikkaarvik Visitor Centre.
Also at the visitor centre, the city is hosting a barbecue for cleanup participants from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. There will be draw prizes for participants at 1:30 p.m.
Last year, as a result of the community cleanup a family was reunited with a carving that was stolen from them seven years ago. A participant found the walrus in a bag sticking out of the sand at the beach behind the elders centre and handed it over to police.
Other Nunavut communities have been scheduling their local community cleanups this month.
Rankin Inlet’s is scheduled for June 11. In Baker Lake, the hamlet’s health and wellness committee has been organizing a weeks-long community cleanup from June 9 to 27.
