A fox suspected of being infected with rabies may have been in contact with several domestic dogs in Iqaluit, the Department of Health announced Tuesday.

The fox was trapped and sent to be tested for rabies following the contact, said spokesperson Danarae Sommerville in a news release.

The dogs are being monitored for signs of rabies.

The Department of Health advises all residents to be on the lookout for foxes due to the danger of rabies.

If a person has been bitten or scratched by a fox or a dog, they should go to the local health centre and report the incident immediately, Sommerville said.

Treatment must be started quickly after exposure as rabies infections are almost always fatal if left untreated.

Domestic animals that spend time tied up outdoors should be monitored for a change in behaviour or signs of rabies, such as behaving strangely, staggering, frothing at the mouth, choking or making strange noises.

Animals exhibiting these signs should be avoided and reported to a regional environmental health officer at 867-975-1163 or a conservation officer at 867- 975-7780.

That’s kinda obvious seems how every street you drive on has several dogs running around. They need to privatize dog catching because by-law just does’nt cut it! I’m suprised rabies is’nt as bad as t.b , there both handled with the same amount of public regard.

‘Way back when, there was no excuse for having unvaccinated dogs – the RCMP gave the shots. Who handles it nowadays? Is every community covered?
