A house fire broke out in Iqaluit today around 10 a.m. at the bottom of Joamie Hill in Happy Valley, sending one person to hospital with minor injuries, said Iqaluit Deputy Fire Chief Landis Carmichael.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and an investigation is ongoing with the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Thirteen firefighters and six fire department vehicles were on the scene, taking about an hour and a half to put out the fire, said Carmichael. No firefighters were injured.

Carmichael said the house, where five people lived, is uninhabitable but the structure is still standing.
