Iqaluit man faces long list of charges including armed robbery

A 27-year-old Iqaluit man arrested this week faces a slew of charges, including three counts of armed robbery.
Just after 3:35 p.m. Wednesday, RCMP officers in Iqaluit responded to a report of an armed robbery in a residence in the Joamie Court area.
They found that one person in the residence and two others in a car nearby had been robbed at gunpoint, the RCMP said in a news release Friday evening.
A suspect was located and resisted an officer’s attempt to arrest him before being taken into custody, the release said.
Kevin Mathewsie is charged with break and enter; three counts of robbery with a firearm; carrying a concealed weapon; unauthorized possession in a motor vehicle; unauthorized possession of a firearm; tampering with a serial number; careless use of a firearm; resisting arrest; failing to comply with a release order; and breach of probation.
Mathewsie remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Iqaluit on Jan. 6, the release said.
Hard drugs are making more and more people desperate and doing these things, how is the overflow of hard drugs coming into our communities being addressed? Just like the hard drugs, they are smuggled in through our airline, cargo, post office and passengers.
If our law enforcement did some digging and surveillance they would find out who is bringing all these illegal drugs and weapons into Nunavut. There are just a few corridors to bring such things into Nunavut.
How does that even works? scary!
Violence in Nunavut is out of control. We need a culture change.
