Direct flights between Iqaluit and Nuuk, Greenland are still expected to start next month.

“We are expecting to fly from Nuuk to Iqaluit in June, but we are still waiting for the last approval from the Canadian government,” an Air Greenland spokesperson confirmed to Nunatsiaq News on May 10.

In October, Air Greenland announced it would provide direct flights between Nuuk and Iqaluit. It said a partnership with Canadian North would then allow passengers to make connections from Iqaluit to Ottawa or Kuujjuaq.

The flights are scheduled to start in June and be available through October.

The confirmation from the Air Greenland spokesperson is the airline’s first update on its flight plan since last October’s announcement.

Also on May 10, Trevor Wilde, Canadian North interim vice-president, confirmed the airline is continuing its partnership with Air Greenland “to connect southern Canada, Nunavut, Nunavik and Greenland with just one ticket purchase.”

He said “more information will become available in the coming days.”

On Monday, Canadian North CEO and president Shelly De Caria issued a post on social media that tagged herself as being in Nuuk.

Currently, Canadian North does not list any scheduled flights to Greenland on its website.

Most people have already planned their summer travels. Good luck selling seats since people like to buy tickets months in advanced. These tickets should have been for sell months ago.
    Too late, Air Greenland.

But I think they are banking on short term travelers. Most people with “summer plans” are not going to be in Greenland for a few weeks unless they are visiting families. But it will pique the interest of people who wants to visit Greenland as a tourist. It will surely help the Alianait festival in Iqaluit. If the price is right, this is a good jumping point for flights into the rest of Europe with just a fraction of the time needed to get there.

I’d curious to know what the connecting flights are gonna cost from Nuuk to Iceland or to Denmark. Very exciting times, I hope this is a common flight route!

Nuuk is a great city, much more enjoyable than Iqaluit. I would love to go back.

One contrast to Nunavut you will notice right away if you travel to Greenland is the absence of derelict vehicles, dilapidated homes and ungodly amounts of garbage absolutely everywhere.

And most towns have bars and there are no dry communities. Hopefully one day nunavut will be able to drink responsibly.

Yes agreed. I feel Nunavut can be like them but need to step up! They’re clean cities and towns and seem to value quality of life. We’re supposed to respect the land but it’s unfortunately dirty and garbage and now beer cans everywhere. I try to do my part but it’s like a hamster in a spin wheel. Maybe more community education and effort is needed? People need to value life and our lovely surroundings, our Nuna!

    Is there a ferry route?

Lol. It’s a hazardous 1000 km crossing. Wishful thinking at best.
