Iqaluit RCMP and Iqaluit municipal enforcement staff are ramping up road stops to catch impaired drivers in the city this weekend.
Drivers should be aware they could be stopped any time and anywhere, police say, as officers will be working “strategically” around the community.
Officers may administer a breath test to anybody suspected of impaired driving. Refusing that test is a criminal offence and is punished similarly to impaired driving, RCMP announced in a news release Friday.
These operations aim to identify and remove impaired drivers, deter dangerous behaviour and keep roads safe, the release said.
Anyone who plans to drink should take a taxi or arrange a sober designated driver.
Police responded to 82 impaired driving incidents in Iqaluit between January and October this year, according to an activity report RCMP presented to city council last month.
The Nunavut Liquor and Cannabis Commission has once again begun rolling out taxi vouchers this winter, which can be redeemed with participating cab companies.
The commission is reminding people to celebrate responsibly.
