Two people were hospitalized after a vehicle rollover on the outskirts of Iqaluit Wednesday morning.

The city’s emergency services responded to the call on the road that leads to the city’s landfill at around 6:52 a.m., Rod Mugford, the City of Iqaluit’s operations director, said in an email.

Two occupants of the vehicle were transported to hospital by ambulance, he said.

Around 11:30 a.m., at least five RCMP officers were investigating the area around the vehicle, which was lying on its right side about eight metres off the road. It appeared to be severely damaged.

RCMP were the only emergency responders there at that time, and the road was blocked as police marked the area with paint and flew a drone over the wreckage.

Mugford did not say what condition the two occupants were in as of Wednesday afternoon, but confirmed the RCMP is investigating.

Nunavut RCMP did not respond to a request on Wednesday for further information.

I’m surprised this does not happen more as there are so many that drink and drive or take drugs and drive.
It seems to be all too common now.

You assume it’s drinking and driving, it might have to do with road condition and person driving didn’t quite know how to drive on gravel

You would have to be going pretty darn fast for the car to be in that conditon. I will safely assume there was some sort of impairment, thanks.

Maybe not drinking or drugs (we don’t know), but definitely dangerous driving. It takes a lot of speed to wreck the car to that degree. This is not road conditions or gravel.

I know that corner. When going towards town, you need to slow down to no more than 80km/h to make that corner.

Unmarked in a municipality means legal speed limit of either 50KM/hr (Traffic Safety Act) or 30KM/hr (local bylaw).

Fast is dangerous and kicks up dust damaging tundra. 30KM/hr should be normalized.

      I hope they wore seatbelts.
