Iqaluit is seeking $203,000 from the Nunavut Department of Culture and Heritage to renovate facilities used by youth and elders and to improve the city’s French translation capabilities.
A report to city councillors this week said a request was made for $118,000 to renovate both the Elders Qammaq — a space where elders gather for food, games and other social activities — and the Makkuttukkuvik youth centre at Arctic Winter Games Arena.
“These two spaces serve as critical hubs for youth and elders in the community, and their upkeep is essential to fostering intergenerational engagement, cultural continuity, and community well-being,” the report said.
Upgrades include renovated bathrooms and flooring, and new painting and furniture.
For French language services, the city is seeking $50,000 to support its ability to produce French news releases, advertisements and other communication materials.
The city is also seeking $35,000 to pay for a program that provides elders country food and crafting materials for sewing and carving.
At their meeting Tuesday night, councillors voted to have staff seek that funding from the Government of Nunavut.

Didn’t the City renovaye the Elders Qammuq during or near the end of COVID?
Funny that in a few short years it needs more renovation or is this more wasteful spending by the City of Iqaluit?
