Iqaluit cop accused of assaulting two prisoners

RCMP constable re-assigned to administrative duties

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

An Iqaluit RCMP member, Cst. Kipanik Eegeesiak, was charged July 10 with two counts of common assault related to incidents involving prisoners, the RCMP said in a news release issued July 13.

The assaults are alleged to have occurred May 16 and the complainants are two people who were in police custody, the RCMP news release said.

At the time, Eegeesiak was “on shift” and working general duties, the RCMP said.

After receiving complaints alleging the assaults, RCMP members conducted a criminal investigation, then sent their information to federal Crown prosecutors.

The RCMP said an “independent” prosecutor from Alberta looked at information from the investigation and decided that two assault charges should be laid.

Eegeesiak has been released with a promise to appear before the Nunavut Court of Justice Sept. 14 in Iqaluit.

The RCMP says the constable is now assigned to “administrative duties” only.
