Iqaluit cop reported charges himself

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

David Aglukark, 30, received a six-month conditional discharge after pleading guilty to assaulting his spouse on July 17, 2002.

The couple started arguing after an evening at a friend’s house, the court heard.

“[Aglukark] lost his temper, grabbed her face, pushed her against the wall and kicked her once,” Crown lawyer Kevin Drolet told Nunatsiaq News after sentencing.

Alcohol was a factor in the attack, Drolet said.

Drolet said mitigating factors in the case were that Aglukark reported the assault to the RCMP, and he has since undergone a 45-day substance abuse treatment program.

If Aglukark adheres to the condition of his sentence, he will have no criminal record.

Aglukark was assigned to administrative duties while the case was before the courts. Staff-Sgt. Mike Jeffrey said Aglukark is back to “full duties.”
