About 150 Iqaluit residents demonstrated in favour of world peace and against a U.S.-led war on Iraq.

The “walk for peace” started at the Nunavut legislative assembly, where some speeches were made, and then continued along Ring Road toward NorthMart, ending at the Anglican parish hall.

Once inside, demonstrators warmed up with coffee and tea, and lit candles as they listened to more speeches. Local musicians performed peace songs, and demonstrators talked about why they support peace rather than war.

After a prayer, demonstrators held a moment of silence for those who have lost their lives fighting for peace.

Similar demonstrations were held across the country. In Montreal, about 6,000 protestors marched to the U.S consulate last Saturday, while in Ottawa about 2,500 people gathered near the parliament buildings. In Halifax, about 1,500 people walked through city streets, and about 600 people marched in Regina.

In Washington, D.C., about 70,000 from around the country gathered for a rally held along the National Mall.

In Igloolik on Tuesday, at least 120 people participated in a demonstration as well. Volunteer Celina Irngaut said that just about every supporter of peace had a banner or a sign both in Inuktitut and English.

“We have to demonstrate again and again and show our support for peace,” Irngaut said.
