Iqaluit seeks new cemetery site
IQALUIT — Iqaluit’s cemetery is running out of space and help is needed to find a new site.
The Town of Iqaluit is now forming a sub-committee to screen potential cemetery sites. The council’s development, works and public safety committee asked staff to include Iqaluit undertaker Bryan Pearson on the committee.
As well, the committee wants to include elders and representatives from the churches. Committee members will be presented with possible sites picked out by town staff, but can also present their own ideas, Iqaluit’s project co-ordinator Matthew Hough said.
Finding a new site is “a very important community issue,” Hough said and committee members will have to look at issues such as whether there are any archeological remains present and whether there is any cultural significance to proposed sites that make it appropriate or inappropriate, Hough said.
