Iqaluit street name project approved

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Iqaluit’s street naming bylaw passed third and final reading on July 23.

About a dozen changes were made to the final 73-name list. Several residents complained last month about simplistic (kamik, ulu) and disrespectful (explorers, igunaq) names.

In place of explorers, names of flowers will line Happy Valley streets. Igunaq was eliminated entirely — though at least one person thought it was an appropriate name because the road leads to the lagoon.

The Road to Nowhere will stay as is, but Apex Road will be called by its Inuktitut name, Niaqunngusiaq.

Economic development officer Cheri Kemp-Kinnear is in the process of ordering the new signage.

The first blue signs will go up at the Four Corners in October, when Queen Elizabeth is in town.

A list of future street names is in place for new roads.

“This list will be endless. It’s an ongoing and growing list of names,” Kemp-Kinnear said.
