Iqaluit’s Aquatic Centre is set to reopen for regular activities Thursday at 5 p.m., after being closed for nearly four days due to a frozen water line.

“City staff have completed the necessary repairs to ensure the facility can safely welcome residents back,” said Geoff Byrne, a City of Iqaluit spokesperson, in a public service announcement issued Thursday.

The centre was closed on Monday due to what an announcement initially described as an “unexpected” problem that was later confirmed to be a frozen water line. City staff worked throughout the week to make repairs.

It is unclear why the waterline froze and whether it was located inside or outside the building.

With busy public swims coming up hoping the staff can actually maintain a first come first serve process instead of allowing all the kids to stand around and then randomly announcing for them to line up which is the complete opposite of first come first serve. This process is unfair and has left a lot of children upset who show up early to get in and then get turned away when they weren’t able to race to the line in time. This is a dangerous and unfair way of managing line ups and when it’s pointed out to the workers they seem to think this is how first come first serve works even though it is not.
