Iqaluit city councillors have approved a contract for work they hope will move the city a step closer to repairing the washrooms and lobby at Arnaitok Arena.

The contract, costing $23,669.60, will see engineering firm EnGlobe Corp. perform a virtual site inspection and later write the tender for a call for proposals to construction companies to bid on the repair work.

Sumon Ghosh, the city’s director of engineering and capital planning, presented the request for decision to councillors Tuesday evening.

The city retained EnGlobe last year, but then put the project off until this year because tenders for the job came in over budget.

This year, $300,000 was put aside in the city’s capital plan for the repairs. Ghosh said he hopes the work will be done over the summer.

This work is part of a larger suite of repairs the city has planned for the arena.

In March last year, the city began the process of installing an ice plant with the goal of keeping the arena open year-round.

In an email Wednesday, city spokesperson Geoff Byrne said the ice plant work is being tendered, but no contract has been awarded yet and there’s no timeline set yet for installation.

The city has also had new accessible doors and and an elevator installed at the arena.

What about the old city offices?

Will the city stop paying rent to the disgraced former mayor’s real estate buddy from Alberta?

Maybe somebody could help us get a functional arena over here in Cambridge Bay.

You should really look into how much the GN has given to the municipality of Cambridge Bay over the last dozen years to repair/clean or construct their arenas.
Answer : More than enough to have the GN provide a basic new arena.

I know. That’s why I’m saying we need a little help over here, the hamlet and the contractors seem to like to accept the money and get nothing done.

Public washrooms are needed near Northmart for the homeless. They keep using beach area as a toilet and it is disgusting.

Between 935 and Service Canada too.

Always stepping over puddles of urine and vomit. My wife and a number of others living in 935 won’t use the side exit because it scares them.

Please let them be for female and male separately, with properly closing doors. There is a place where i live now where the library has one bathroom for men and women together and is open to the lobby area. most uncomfortable place ever. You can see how people are embarrassed being forced to use facilities like that. I literally go behind the building now instead with my kids. O feel sorry for the young girls and elderly men the most. So terrible

      Just so I understand correctly.

You’re so unsettled by a gender neutral washroom that you make your kids defecate outside?

      Yikes.

Easy there, desk jockey. We arent crapping on people’s lawns, just peeing behind some bushes.
        .
And as a male you know how well your bathrooms are cared for. I know men have women take the children to the female bathrooms because they are cleaner.

Did you think calling me a desk jockey would be insulting? I’m proud of my comfy chair and salary.

Cute anecdote. You do you, lol.

If the rink staff could clean them and maybe install shower heads older than 1990 it would be so bad but the rink staff do nothing but complain about a bit of tape or a can of beer left behind by renters!

I was there when they built the place, (70’s) just getting around to fixing it up?
I broke the new fire hall door with the new fire truck the first day, did they get around to fixing that?
