IQALUIT — The drive to bring a French-language school to Iqaluit is close to fruition.

A government official confirmed that negotiations between the federal government and the Nunavut government to pay for the new school are “all but signed.”

“We’re in the final throws of having financial agreement,” said Murray Horn, the director of corporate services for Nunavut’s Department of Education.

Horn said a tentative agreement has been reached and Nunavut is now waiting for the “formal sign-off” from Heritage Canada. Under the agreement, costs would be split between the federal government and the Nunavut government.

“We’re shooting for the fall of 2001,” Horn said when asked when a French-language school might open.

Nunavut’s francophone association is spear-heading the drive to bring a French school to the capital.

A year ago it was expected a school would be built on the same lot as the new middle school and provide French first-language instruction for students from kindergarten to Grade 9.
