ITK and ICC to anoint new heads
After a confirmation vote to be held July 7 in Inuvik at the organization’s annual general meeting, Mary Simon will become president of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.
Simon will succeed Jose Kusugak, who announced earlier this year that he wants to quit the job.
Simon, whose name was put forward by Makivik Corp. President Pita Aatami, is the only person nominated for the job. The nomination period closed this past Friday.
A former president of Makivik, Simon served as Canada’s first Arctic ambassador and as ambassador to Denmark. She has also served as president of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference.
The day after Simon’s confirmation vote, the board of ICC Canada, which comprises most of the people who serve on ITK’s board, will confirm Duane Smith’s re- appointment as president of ICC Canada.
