Nearly all Nunavik airports will get renovations or upgrades this summer, Kativik Regional Government has announced.
During this week’s council meeting in Kuujjuaraapik, assistant transportation director Akin Akindele presented his department’s activity report showing where $90 million in funding announced by the Quebec government in April will be spent.
Akulivik and Salluit will see their airport runways resurfaced this summer, while the plan to resurface Puvirnituq’s runway is still awaiting a schedule from Quebec’s Ministry of Transport, Akindele said.
Salluit will see its airport access road culvert replaced this summer as well. An environmental assessment is planned for September.
The provincial Transport Ministry has reissued its call for tenders to carry out demolition of Kuujjuaraapik airport’s hangar. This means work is now expected to be done this fall. If the contract is not awarded on time, the project could be delayed until 2025.
Work to rehabilitate Tasiujaq’s airport access road is scheduled to begin in August, Akindele said. Geotechnical drilling is also planned for Tasiujaq and Umiujaq this summer.
Relocation and installation of a motorized airside access gate is being done in Umiujaq this summer. And at Kangiqsujuaq’s airport, where the runway was resurfaced last year, a new runway lighting system replacement will be set in place.
Work is to start in Kuujjuaq in June to replace runway visual aids, with the project expected to end this summer. An upgrade to the airport security camera monitoring system for the terminal and the airside gate is beginning this summer.
All 14 airports are also having a phone patch system installed, with work beginning this month and finishing in July.

No Jet service for Hudson coast all summer, unless Raglan allows shuttle transfers to Twotters & dash 8’s. Challenger Medivacs will only be out of Kuge, or Lagrande 🛫………………🛬
There is no way Glencore will allow other airlines to use Donaldson airport. Terminal is too small and what do you do with 100 or passenger are stuck , when the weather closes in.
Raglan? Where was Raglan when the Westfold fell? Where was Raglan when our enemies closed in around us!? Where was Rag — No, my Lord Raglan employee, we are alone.
