After five days on the trails, the Ivakkak dogsled race is paused at Pingualuit National Park in Nunavik.

Teams arrived at the park Monday to dry out and rest with plans to resume Tuesday morning, but weather has delayed the restart, organizers said on Facebook.

About 216 kilometres remain in the 530-kilometre race, which started in Akulivik on March 18 and finishes in Quaqtaq.

As of the end of Day 5, Aisa Surusila and Piita James Napartuk from Puvirnituq are in first place overall with a time of about four hours. They lead by about 58 minutes overall.

Tasiujaq’s Charlie Angnatuk and Itsaja Angnatuk are in second place, in about four hours and 17 minutes.

Willie Cain Jr. and Shawn Aullaluk, also from Tasiujaq, round out the top three, arriving at the park in about four hours and 27 minutes.

The race is expected to resume Wednesday if weather permits, organizers said.
