Jack Anawak, who resigned from Iqaluit city council on Monday following a weekend vehicle crash, has been charged with impaired driving, RCMP confirmed Tuesday.
Anawak is a veteran Nunavut politician who was elected to city council on Oct. 23. He cited the crash as his reason for quitting council during a short interview Monday.
Tuesday’s RCMP news release said Anawak, the former Nunavut MP and MLA originally from Naujaat, was involved in a collision Saturday in Iqaluit.
He was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of operating a vehicle while impaired and one count of operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of over 80 milligrams, which is the legal limit.
Anawak declined to answer Monday when he was asked if was impaired at the time of the crash.
This isn’t the first time Anawak has been charged with impaired driving. In 2018, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to two counts of impaired driving. And in 2013, he pleaded guilty to similar charges.
Anawak is scheduled to appear in court in Iqaluit on Jan. 25, 2024.

That s why , he quit
He’s the hero Iqaluit deserves, not the one it needs right now.
I hope you have representation, Inuit or Otherwise.
Wow council is off to a great start, can’t wait to watch the next 4 years unfold lol
Probably P.T.S.D.. Residential schools and pressures of political life. Must take it’s toll on Mr. Anawak. Sometimes, alcohol makes one’s pain go away for some.
They still give his license back 3rd time now ? If he can do that we all can do that also
