Jason Iqaluq wins Hudson Bay byelection
Voter turnout was less than 50 per cent
Jason Iqaluq will be the new MLA for the Hudson Bay constituency in Nunavut’s legislative assembly after winning Monday’s byelection over Nukaja Sala.
Iqaluq received 168 of the 228 ballots cast, while Sala received 54, according to Elections Nunavut’s website. Voter turnout was 48.61 per cent, with 228 of the 469 eligible voters casting ballots.
Voting took place Sept. 28 at the council chamber in Sanikiluaq. Advance voting was available from Sept. 14 to 24 at the hamlet office, and a mobile poll was held Sept. 21.
Iqaluq has lived in Sanikiluaq, the sole community in the Hudson Bay riding, his entire life. He works as a station team leader at the community’s airport and has served on the board of the local Arctic Co-op for about nine years.
The Hudson Bay seat became vacant after former MLA Daniel Qavvik resigned June 1. He was elected in 2022.
