Photo: Keep the home fires burning

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

This dump is on fire: A column of smoke and steam pours from Iqaluit’s landfill the morning of Sept. 24. City public works superindendent Frank Ford said it’s likely that the dump’s wood pile — roughly a third of the material in the landfill — had been smoldering for days before anyone noticed. Ford said the worst of the blaze had been extinguished, and public works staff were operating heavy machinery to dig up the smoldering remnants of the fire to be doused. Without water service at the landfill, city water trucks had to bring the water to supply the fire department’s pumps. No one was hurt. On Sept. 27., Iqaluit’s fire chief said the fire may burn for months, because it’s centred in an area that’s too dangerous for firefighters to approach. (PHOTO BY CHRIS WINDEYER)
