Kangirsuk is holding election to fill mayor vacancy
Community has been without a mayor since the death of Etua Kaukai in July

The community of Kangirsuk is holding a byelection to fill the mayoral seat, following the death of Etua Kaukai in July.
Lucy Tukkiapik Carrier, Maggie Annahatak and Noah Eetook entered the race, which is scheduled for Wednesday, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Advanced polling took place Sunday.
Carrier has long served as the local representative for Kangirsuk on the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services. She was elected chairperson of the board’s executive committee.
Annahatak currently works as a housing manager with the Nunavik Housing Bureau.
Nunatsiaq News attempted to get comment from each candidate. Annahatak declined. The other two did not respond.
Kaukai was elected mayor on Nov. 6, 2024, for a three-year term. He also served on the board of Nunavik Investment Corp., a non-profit that provides funding and loans to entrepreneurs.
