Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada to hold election during General Assembly in Iqaluit

Two candidates are running for the presidency of the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada, the organization said in a July 15 statement.
They are Kilikvak Kabloona and Herb Nakimayak.
On July 21, during the ICC Canada Annual General Meeting in Iqaluit, representatives from the four regional Inuit organizations will select the president. The term is four years.
ICC Canada is one arm of the international Inuit organization that advocates on behalf of about 180,000 Inuit.
From Nunavut, Kabloona is a former chief executive officer of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.
From Northwest Territories, Nakimayak has been the acting president of ICC Canada since September 2025.
Nakimayak was named interim president by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami president Natan Obed, who himself had been interim ICC Canada president after Lisa Koperqualuk of Nunavik resigned the position in March 2025. Nakimayak was an ICC Canada vice-president at the time.
Kabloona took leave without pay from her role as NTI CEO to run for the Liberals in the 2025 federal election. She fell 41 votes shy of MP Lori Idlout.
ICC Canada had also put out a call for nominees for the position of vice-president, international affairs, but no one came forward. As a result, ICC Canada says it will have a new nomination period but did not specify when.
The more the merrier! ICC need to live up to its title and take international matters to the core, opening channels of communications with the far east. National regimes over here and you can bet the farm on it, the military led and influenced institutions won’t do so. There is no need for these endless wars which are meant to funnel wealth into the pockets of a few while we are left to struggle in an increasingly unaffordable economy as the end product. Had you not seen that conflict and capitalism are two sides of a same coin.

Trying things to make change was refreshing with Kilikvak at the helm of NTI. Giving much needed vouchers to take part in elections was a great way to move forward. Suing the worthless GN for the total disregard of Inuit education was a worthy cause in my books. Having the courage to push government around is one totally lacking with the Inuit organizations in Nunavut today. Go Kilikvak Go!
Former NTI President was appointed international ICC chair now the former CEO of NTI trying for the ICC Canada, these two together have done so much damage, it’s a scary thought of what they would do with ICC, they think they are the elite that know what is best of Inuit without talking to Inuit.
We have a problem today with certain people who think they know what’s best and are above everyone, ITK is in the same position.
Explain what so much damage both individuals has done, why didn’t you run for office?
