A dump fire in Kimmirut was safely put out on Thursday evening, but there it’s unclear what started it and whether there will be an investigation.

The fire was discovered around 2:45 p.m., said hamlet Chief Administration Officer John Mabberi-Mudonyi in an interview on Friday.

Eight firefighters extinguished the fire by 9 p.m. There were no reported injuries.

Mabberi-Mudonyi said he isn’t sure what caused the fire or if there would be a investigation.

The Kimmirut dump fire is the third in Nunavut since the beginning of July.

On July 4, firefighters in Rankin Inlet fought a blaze that local authorities called “suspicious.”

Two days before that, Iqaluit firefighters attended a fire at the landfill.

Crews worked until midnight when they thought the fire was finally out. On July 3, at around 1 p.m., the fire had reignited and quickly spread to the rest of the landfill. Fire Chief Mark Wyatt told Nunatsiaq New the fire could take weeks to put out.

Wyatt said several people had been seen near the dump before the fire started and that the incident is under investigation.
