Kitikmeot Inuit choose new executives for regional association

Inuit in western Nunavut went to the polls on Monday, Dec. 9 to elect new executive members for the Kitikmeot Inuit Association.
On Dec. 10, Martina Maniyogina, the chief returning officer, announced the results of the election, which took place in Kugluktuk, Cambridge Bay, Gjoa Haven, Taloyoak and Kugaaruk:
• Clara Evalik of Cambridge Bay is the new vice-president for economic development. She received 308 votes, winning over the incumbent, Charlie Lyall of Taloyoak, who received 265 votes.
• Attima Hadlari of Cambridge Bay was returned to the position of vice-president for wildlife. Hadlari received 325 votes, while Joe Ashevak of Taloyoak 136 votes and George Sonny Porter of Gjoa Haven 107 votes.
• Natasha Lear is the new board member for Cambridge Bay. She received 75 votes, beating the incumbent, André Otokiak, who received 52 votes.
• Bob Aknavigak of Cambridge Bay was acclaimed as vice-president for social and cultural development.
First order of business is…. get to the bottom of the Kitnuna bankruptcy debacle. Make the KIA, KC and JV co’s financial statements available to the public esp. to NLCA beneficiaries. It is disgraceful & shameful how the Kitikmeot is being run into the ground for present & future Kitikmeot Inuit generations by the local RIO.
what happened with Kitnuna? what are they going to do with the two Tank Farms in the middle of town? what about the contaminated soil behind their Garage and all their junk in the Yard towards Water Lake?
what happened to the Land Remediation Farm behind the Upper Air Station, who does this belong to now?
Also, why does Kitikmeot Inuit Association basically shut down operations for 3 weeks in December? Is this paid leave? does all KIA Staff take annual leave at the same time or is this our Beneficiary Money being spent on quality time for Staff as bonus leave?
Very low voter turn out! Why do we still have members being acclaimed? There should be no such thing, younger generation start getting involved and put your names in. You can make a difference and make changes.
This is the change we need, even when you think you can’t be part of it. try! You will be surprised once you start taking part and start being involved.
I agree with the comments and questions raised by Sadude and Northern Inuit, I also would like to hear answers on these issues they’ve both raised, thank you.

Been a long time since a Kitikmeot young person ran for any kind of election. Too busy making babies & family life I guess.
