Kudos for Karetak
IQALUIT — Elisapee Karetak of Arviat won two awards for her writing at this year’s Western Magazine Awards Foundation gala.
Karetak’s article “Kikkik: A Daughter’s Story” was honoured as the best human-experience story of the year and the best story of the year for the Alberta/Northwest Territories region.
The article is about the legacy of her mother’s acquittal on murder charges in 1958. The tragic circumstances leading to her mother’s arrest happened during the famous famine at Ennadai Lake.
Karetak’s story was published in the November/December 2000 issue of Up Here.
In a press release issued by Cooper Langford, the editor of Up Here, Langford states, “Elisapee is deeply deserving of her awards.
“Her story was a highlight in our publishing year.”
