Kuujjuaq celebrates Co-op expansion
Hats, gloves, candies and other prizes rain down on the heads of Kuujjuaq residents who gathered to celebrate the opening of a new section of the community’s Co-op store on Dec. 17. That day residents were also treated to a raffle draw, and to 30 per cent off everything in the store, except for cigarettes, alcohol and vehicles. (Photo by Isabelle Dubois)
I do agree that the prices at the co-op is very high. Everything is very expensive. 24 beers $124. But what’s interesting is that many that complain are the ones that have supported those inflated prices over years. For me , I’ve always not only complain, but I rarely buy from that store. But to see the big mouth complaining when they’re are the ones who allow the prices to get so high. Those have had said nothing over the years, when they’ve could have done something. Those on the boards and committees allowing nothing to change.
I am very proud of how Co-op store of Kuujjuaq is winning back its commercial business, last time it lost a lot of money, it was in drowning deficit, but the new board have managed to bring the Co-op back, it was even getting supported from other Co-ops of Nunavik.
And now, the new expansion will bring cooked meals on the spot, which I am looking forward to.
I find some of their foods are still lower than other stores if you start comparing, you’ll see the differences.
You all know living in North is not cheap, high cost it is, flight cargo, sealift cargo are also to be considered.
I will still support co-op, and they offers profits to their Co-op memberships.
but the new board has managed to bring the Co-op back? I strongly disagree that the new or old board has anything to do with bringing the co-op back. As a matter of fact, it’s not really back. It’s fcnq, that has used the addictive desires of people , to run the beer and wine prices so high that it profits on the suffering of the community. This is not rocket science! This is a monument of a building to commemorate the injury, early death of people that fall victim to alcohol within the ridiculously high prices.
A few points: such high prices. Yet during Christmas allowing 30 to 50 percent off. Why not ration the discounts over the longer period, rather than a Big Bang discount at Christmas. This goes to show, how high the prices are in the first place, those high discounts, and the co-op still making money. Secondly: why the extremely high beer and wine prices? Someone at the board needs to address the community on this. Give the population an idea of what it cost to get beer and wine, landed in the community. The customer is demanding that be done. Stop the crook prices.
Cooked meals on the spot. Let’s acknowledge some facts, you can disagree with me, but I don’t think you will. There are too many times when staff don’t show up to work. The gas bar has an on going problem with getting workers. And then getting these workers to show up to work. Usually it’s staff with young people at the hours when the regular employees don’t show. Half the time the cash only sign is up and showing! Thereby turning customer away. Not sure what that’s all about, but it’s common at the gas station. I’m not too sure about them cooks, showing up to serve that hot meal on the spot.
Why don’t you go work there and go help out, see how management are struggling running and chasing their workers, you think it is simple running the place?!
And try to work at gas station, it is cold in that little building when it comes to freezing weather!
Perfect wannabe!
The place is still on construction for kitchen portion, no cook is hired yet, I count on cooked meals on the spot!
The place will be operational once the kitchen is fully installed, but in the mean time, it will need to go through agriculture inspections before serving meals, it is not just simple yet!
The co-op respects the dearly departed by not selling beer and wine on the day of death , and or the day of burial. Yet, the store is not closed on the day of death, but is closed for the funeral. It appears someone or more than one, has a notion that alcohol is such a sinful thing that to sell it on such occasions would add to the sins. This being called respect). That notion of a sinful thing is hidden in the minds of so many, as to make a contribution to the ill effects caused by alcohol use in the first place. When you live with a sub consciousness of these sinful behaviours! You’re surely more than not to manifest all the negativity of the otherwise pleasurable possibilities. I would ask why sell a sinful thing , if you considered it to be such, like, why sell it any day, not to wait for death?
Yes, I agree with you Beer sales and the dearly departed.
In our golden days, normally everything use to get closed down until final burial of the dearly beloveth departed, no one was suppose drink until final funeral was set to finish, it was not just one day thing, we use to visit the loved ones being left behind, go respect them, comfort them, even cook meals for them in addition, even do their house chores.
Nowadays, we see no respect, they go see the loved ones by showing drunk, disrespecting them, one day is not enough to close the beer sales during our departed member is set to rest in peace. Qanualutuiinnaq inuulirturut!
Ironically, many of the dearly departed, went to their grave so early because of the booze in the first place. In hindsight, shutting down the beer and wine sales is therefore appropriate and makes sense! At least as a token of awareness. But it ends there. Just waiting for sales to start again, death to occur, and sales to stop, and so on and so on, amen.
Not only people departed from alcohol, many died from sickness illness too, to respect the loved ones!
Don’t be so negative, we cannot just start blaming people dying from alcohol nature, anyone is set to die anyway, GOD only knows how!
This is not about people that have died naturally from illness, as we are all going to die. This is about those that die early from alcohol abuse, car accidents while impaired. The only negative in this is the ones who are in denial that it’s happening. Think about the love ones, like little kids that have to endure the lost of parents who die from alcohol, or are hospitalized in disability condition. What’s negative about pointing that kind of thing out, you tell me?
