Kuujjuaq men plead guilty to manslaughter
Last week in Kuujjuaq, Bobby Angnatuk, 26, and Gary Makiuk, 26, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of Johnny Angnatuk, 60, Bobby’s father.
They were sentenced to five years in a federal penitentiary.
The two had already been held for one year in preventive custody. The court considers time spent in preventive custody to be double-time.
“So, it’s like a seven-year sentence,” said Crown Prosecutor Pierre Duchesneau.
However, with good behaviour in jail, Angnatuk and Makiuk could be released before the end of their sentences.
Last January, Angnatuk, a municipal sewage truck driver, died at the Montreal General Hospital of severe injuries he had received during a fight over booze.
At the time of his death, Angnatuk’s body was covered with bruises, and there was a deep imprint of a heel on one side of his face. According to the autopsy report, Angnatuk also had other older injuries.
