Kuujjuaq to get $8 million culture centre

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

IQALUIT — A new $8 million cultural and conference centre is in the works for Nunavik’s largest community. If all goes according to plan, the new facility will be ready in time for the Inuit Circumpolar Conference bash, to be held in Kuujjuaq in summer 2003.

The centre will feature a multi-purpose 500-seat meeting space, a state-of-the-art cinema, a visitors’ centre, as well as office space for the municipality of Kuujjuaq and Nunavik Tourism. The site under consideration for the centre is located between Kuujjuaq’s airport and the town, and is close to existing hotels.

To fund this project, the Kativik Regional Government has been scrambling to put together money from a variety of sources. Quebec’s departments of municipal affairs, culture and communications, and regional development, plus Kuujjuamiut Inc., Hydro-Québec and Tourism Quebec, are all expected to kick in money for the centre.

Last week the ICC executive met in Kuujjuaq to check out the community’s preparations for the bash.
