Coun. Kyle Sheppard will be Iqaluit’s acting mayor for one week later this month.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, Mayor Solomon Awa announced that he, as well as deputy Mayor Kim Smith and alternate deputy Mayor Harry Flaherty, will all be out of town at the same time.

Therefore, an acting mayor was needed for Nov. 27 to Dec. 3.

No city council meetings are scheduled between those dates.

Awa suggested Sheppard, who was previously deputy mayor, take on the acting mayor role temporarily. He noted the acting mayor will have “signing authority” on banking and payment matters on those days.

The five councillors present at Tuesday’s meeting voted unanimously to appoint Sheppard as acting mayor for that week.

Kyle, please make a 3 way stop in front of the hospital or actual traffic lights please. The cross walk lights are ignored by many drivers and the community folks staying at hospital residence ignore them too. Let’s save lives by putting in something that works.
