Major repaving project ongoing on Mivvik Street in Iqaluit
City advises access to some areas could be limited and residents should expect minor delays
The second phase of the repaving of Mivvik Street in Iqaluit started Thursday and will continue for the next week.
The project, which saw the street closed on July 10 with an expected reopening of Aug. 10, is being done in three stages.
Work involves the complete removal and replacement of the existing pavement and road foundation over a 5,400-square metre area, the City of Iqaluit announced Thursday.
“This work includes excavation, disposal of old materials, the supply and installation of new granular sub-base and base materials, and the application of a new hot mix pavement in two layers,” it said in a release.
The closure is being carried out in three stages, and further updates will be provided at each stage, the city said. The second stage, which started July 18, runs until July 25.
The announcement said that during the closure, access to some properties along Mivvik Street could be limited and residents should expect minor delays.
The detour at the Fed/Assembly/Greenstone needs to be a four-way stop. It is dangerous to allow traffic from Fed Road to continue turning left without stopping, and creates risk of accidents when there are cars that need to go straight from/towards Franco Centre, or turn left to get to the Parnaivik Building.
This is a very good point.
.
I would also say that for more permanent traffic solutions Iqaluit should consider turning some areas like Four Corners and the turning area to go up to the plateau into roundabouts, just to make some heavy turning areas smoother.
If everyone just followed the rules of the road it really wouldn’t be a issue, but drivers in this town struggle with the simple basics. Like oh its a STOP sign…I must stop until its safe to go… The reason that spot is dangerous right now is all of the junior by-law officers wanna-be’s directing traffic from their cars thinking they are helping, but really making things much worst and dangerous. Follow the rules of the road, be predictable and everything will work out the way it is suppose to.
There needs to be turning lanes. The bottle neck around plateau also causes traffic to build up.
I wonder how much this little section of paving will cost? I still shake my head at the crazy amount it cost the city to pave roads, I don’t understand why their road crew doesn’t do the work annually during the summer months.
It would be great if developers would be required to properly repair pavement in front of their new buildings after construction was finished. The stretch of Mivvik by Baffin Gas was never great but it got so much worse after the new apartment building there went in.
as usual,..there seems to be no extra thought on the 4 corners..while installing new pavement..why not at same time get turning lanes put in and traffic lights there..why is this so difficult to put in place..traffic lights work everywhere else in the world..the intersection is a clusterf#ck to say the least..
traffic lights are expensive, i get it. And Iqaluit is infested with vandals. But i agree with a turning lane. However there are many drivers who have no clue to use the turning lane in front of Sivummut and those turning right after the leg assembly are even more clueless.
