Makivik delagates gather for AGM

IQALUIT — Nunavik’s largest and most politically-charged event, the annual general meeting of Makivik Corporation, starts Monday in Kuujjuaraapik.

Delegates from every community and organization in Nunavik will be able knock heads with political emissaries from the federal and provincial governments, trying to curry favour with Nunavimmiut. Both Quebec’s minister of native affairs, Guy Chevrette, and Bob Nault, the federal minister of Indian and Northern affairs, are expected to make an appearance.

Amid the updates on bread-and-butter issues — such as housing, unsettled claims, marine infrastructures, and reports from youth and wildlife researchers — is the long-awaited presentation of the Nunavik Commission’s recommendations for a new regional government in Nunavik.

Makivik’s president Pita Aatami said all the commissioners, apart from the Quebec-appointee André Binnette, are expected to be present for the ensuing discussions.

Crees from the neighbouring community of Whapmasgoostui may hold a protest during the meeting.
