Makivvik opens nominations for president

Nominations due by Jan. 8; election scheduled for Feb. 1

Makivvik Corp. is calling for nominations to elect its president.

The corporation, mandated to represent the interests of Quebec Inuit under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, made the announcement Dec. 4 in a news release.

Current president Pita Aatami has served in the role since 2021. From 2013 to 2020, he was president and CEO of Air Inuit. Previous to that he was president of Makivvik from 1998 to 2012.

People in Nunavik can request a nomination form from the Makivvik offices in their local community or their local landholding corporation. They can also contact chief returning officer Phebe Bentley at elections@makivvik.ca.

Nomination forms can be sent to the returning officer by fax at 514-745-0364 or email at elections@makivvik.ca.

The deadline to send nomination forms is Jan. 8 by 5 p.m. local time.

The election for all communities will be held Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. local time. Advance polls are scheduled to open Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. and run until 6 p.m.

Eligible voters will have the opportunity to either vote online or in-person.
