A 25-year-old man faces four charges, including two counts of attempted murder, in connection with an incident in Arctic Bay involving a firearm on May 8.
Police charged Tony Akoomalik with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of discharging a firearm with intent.
Arctic Bay RCMP responded to a complaint of a man discharging a firearm in the community, in which one resident suffered a non-life-threatening injury, said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. George Henrie.
When police arrived, an individual fired at the officers, prompting RCMP to issue a cellphone alert advising residents to shelter in place and lock their doors.
The officers summoned backup in the form of the Nunavut RCMP containment team, their major crimes unit and additional investigators from Iqaluit.
Meanwhile, the suspect attempted to flee, but was restrained by a bystander.
Soon afterward, the suspect was arrested without further incident or injury to anyone and the shelter-in-place advisory was lifted.
Akoomalik was remanded into custody and flown to Iqaluit. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 3.
