Man charged in death of man struck by vehicle in Kangiqsujuaq

Nunavik police have announced charges in the death of a 23-year-old man who was struck by a vehicle July 1 in Kangiqsujuaq.

At around 3:48 a.m. that morning, police officers responded to a report of the incident, which occurred in the marina parking lot. An ambulance transported the man to the local nursing station, where he was pronounced dead, police said Monday in a news release.

A family member identified the victim to Nunatsiaq News as Putulik Tuniq.

Shortly after the incident, Nunavik police arrested Lucasi Kiatainaq, though he was not charged immediately, deputy-Chief Shaun Longstreet told Nunatsiaq News in July.

“He was released because the investigation wasn’t complete and we were still gathering evidence,” Longstreet said Monday in an interview.

Kiatainaq was arrested again in Montreal on Aug. 21 and appeared in court the next day. The Nunavik Police Service said he was released on conditions set by the court, including an order to stay at a specific address outside Nunavik.

The 27-year-old faces three charges: theft of a vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and failure to stop after an accident resulting in death.

Kiatainaq’s next court date is set for Sept. 18.
