Court proceedings for Manasi Foo — charged with second-degree murder in the Christmas Day death of Jolene Arreak, 46, originally from Pond Inlet — were adjourned Friday in an Ottawa courtroom.

An agent for Michael Davies, Foo’s proposed legal counsel, said in court that Foo has applied to Legal Aid Ontario to retain Davies as his lawyer.

The defence requested a two-week adjournment to allow time for legal aid’s response.

The case is to return to court Jan. 24.

Foo, 35, who remains in custody, listened to Friday’s proceedings through an audio feed rather than attending virtually by video conference.

Foo is charged in the Dec. 25 death of Arreak, who the Ottawa Police Service said was killed around 6:10 p.m. on Christmas Day at a home on Spadina Avenue in the city’s Hintonburg neighbourhood.

Police have not released her cause of death or details of the events that led to it.

Foo is also charged with the attempted murder of a second person, identified in court documents as Ji Pang Foo. The surviving victim was treated in hospital and released.

Police have not confirmed the nature of the relationship between Foo, Arreak, and the second victim.

Foo made his initial court appearance on Dec. 26 and was remanded into custody. Arreak was Ottawa’s 25th homicide victim of 2024.
