A 37-year-old man is charged with second-degree murder in Arviat, police say.

Officers responded to a report of an unresponsive man at a residence on 10th Street at 2:30 a.m. Monday, Nunavut RCMP announced Tuesday. Inside, they found Mike Angalik, 48, who was taken to the local health centre where he was pronounced dead.

After securing the scene, police arrested Ashley Mamgark and charged him with murder.

The two men knew each other, the RCMP said. Nunavut RCMP’s major crime unit is in Arviat and investigating.

Mamgark is scheduled to make his first court appearance Jan. 6 in Iqaluit.

Nunatsaiq News, why are my comments being deleted?

News around Nunavut go around so quick as we aren’t such a big population in Nunavut, theses things happen all around the world. Way more than you think. Just look at the news from down south, theses southerners coming up here saying Nunavut is a dangerous place but don’t look at what is happening from where they came from

If you look at per capita statistics, Nunavut is far more violent than anywhere in the south.

Arviat is growing rapidly with young families with this many population where theres no jobs. New leaders new premiers is just a start. Sad to see. I hope the future kids are safe and know what to do. Youth having weed problems, hash, and many tried sniffing, not seen or said in the public. This premier is just bringing whole governemnt to new starters. Arviat is no governemnt. Theres four stores, one hamlet office, three schools, two gn buildings. No canada offices service canada.
