Police in Pangnirtung have charged a man with attempted murder after a 23-year-old male suffered multiple lacerations in a “weapon attack.”

Officers were dispatched to the local health centre Monday at around 4:30 a.m. after receiving a call about a man with serious injuries sustained during an attack with a weapon, RCMP spokesman Cpl. George Henrie said in a news release Tuesday.

The victim, who was not named, was being treated by local health centre staff. The RCMP officers provided first aid until health professionals arrived.

After officers determined the attack had occurred outside the 700 block, a suspect was identified and taken into custody without incident, Henrie said.

Gregory Atagoyuk, 23, is charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of carrying a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence.

The injured man was airlifted to Ottawa for medical treatment.

Police ask anyone with photographs or videos of the incident to contact the Pangnirtung RCMP office at 867-473-0123.

That is a very violent act for someone young. I hope people send more information because we need to stop doing this. Inuuqatik’s, hurting and almost killing each other is NOT OK! We need to help each other, violence is NOT OK..Taima! Our ancestors survived and for us to become like this is sad. Please, we need more grassroots organizations to stop and support the need to end violence.

Sending thoughts to the victim, hoping they have a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹 they will definitely have trauma and hardship from such an ignorant violent act.
