An Igloolik man is charged with second-degree murder in connection with an incident there early Thursday.

At about 5 a.m. Thursday, RCMP officers responded to a report that a deceased male had been transported to the local health centre, Nunavut RCMP said in a news release Friday afternoon.

Later Thursday, officers with the RCMP’s major crime unit arrested Leonard Qamaniq, 39, and charged him with second-degree murder.

The news release did not identify the victim or say how old he was.

Qamaniq appeared before a justice of the peace and was remanded in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 9 in Iqaluit, the news release said.
