A 69-year-old man is dead after being struck by a driver near the Ullivik health centre in Dorval, Que., on Tuesday.
The incident happened near the health centre after a driver turned from Orly Avenue onto Michel-Jasmin Avenue, said Montreal police spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron in an interview with Nunatsiaq News.
On Wednesday, Ullivik director Rita Novalinga, Inuulitsivik Health Centre executive director Sarah Beaulne and Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services executive director Jennifer Munick-Watkins issued a statement about “the tragic death of a member of our community last night in Dorval.”
“As a community, we mourn this loss together,” the statement reads. “Our thoughts and hearts are with the family, loved ones, and the entire Inukjuak community during this difficult time.”
The statement did not provide any more details about the incident, and NRBHSS, which issued the statement, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Other fatal collisions have happened near the health centre. In 2022, two Inuit women, in two separate incidents, were killed by drivers on nearby Highway 520.
