One man was pronounced dead after police and volunteer firefighters responded to a report of a house fire in Whale Cove early Monday morning.

At 2:52 a.m., Whale Cove RCMP responded to a call about a fire at a fourplex in the hamlet’s 200 block, said Sgt. George Henrie, spokesperson for Nunavut RCMP, in a news release.

Officers discovered the front entrance to the home was on fire. Volunteer firefighters put out the flames and removed an unconscious 38-year-old man from the residence.

Officers and firefighters attempted to perform lifesaving measures on the victim and transported him to the local health centre where he was later pronounced dead, the release said.

No one was else was in the home at the time of the fire, Henrie said in an interview Wednesday.

“The fire is suspicious in nature and RCMP are investigating the incident with the assistance from the Nunavut fire marshal’s office and the Nunavut coroner’s office,” Henrie said in the news release.

Both Henrie and Michelle Gervais, acting Nunavut fire marshal, declined a request to provide further information, citing the ongoing investigation.

Calls and an email to Nunavut’s chief coroner went unanswered.
