Martha Kauki remembered

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

The community of Kangirsuk has remembered Martha Kauki and her family with the blessing of two new search-and-rescue boats and a new van for elders.

Every community in Nunavik has received similar boats from the Kativik Regional Government, while Makivik Corporation furnished the new vans for use by elders.

Kauki, who was one of Nunavik’s most skilled translators and interpreters, died at sea with her husband and two of their children in August 2003 as they were heading home by boat from a wedding in Kuujjuaq.

“I don’t think we would have gotten those boats otherwise,” said Joseph Annahatak, who is the mayor of Kangirsuk and Kauki’s brother. “There’s a lot of mixed emotions for me. I had mentioned many times in the past that we needed these boats – there was no question [about the need] after the accident.”

As the new boats were put into water, some residents of the community threw flowers into the water in memory of those lost at sea.
