Gov. Gen. Mary Simon has tested positive for COVID-19, she announced on her official Twitter account Wednesday afternoon.

Simon, 74, said she is experiencing “mild” symptoms, and plans to self-isolate and rest over the coming days.

Yesterday, her official Twitter account announced that her husband, Whit Fraser, had also tested positive.

Simon, a longtime Inuit leader and activist from Nunavik, was appointed to be the Queen’s representative in Canada in July 2021.

In separate statements, Simon thanked health-care workers and encouraged people to get vaccinated.

Simon received her first vaccination in March 2021, at the Akausivik Inuit Family Health Team in Ottawa. In 2021, as vaccination rollouts were beginning, it was hoped a high-profile Inuk leader getting a vaccination would encourage other Inuit to get the jab.

“As Whit and I are experiencing first-hand, we are not out of this pandemic yet, but we have made tremendous progress,” Simon said Wednesday. “We are both grateful for all those making a difference in our fight against the virus.”

Simon and Fraser are both vaccinated and boosted, according to her statements.

Yes, according to a nurse I spoke to at public health, it is inevitable that everyone will get it at some point, particularly because our communities are small, etc. I’m waiting for my turn too.

I’m sure Mary Simon was very good about wearing her mask, was triple vaccinated, probably practiced social-distancing and washed her hand. She took all the precautions that (we are told) will save our bacon. None of those things are apparently very effective in preventing the spread of Covid.
