Medical travel to Winnipeg continues despite Manitoba wildfires
Provincial state of emergency might make hotel rooms harder to find but boarding homes are under capacity, GN says
Medical travel from Nunavut to Winnipeg is not affected by the wildfires burning in Manitoba or the province-wide state of emergency, a the Government of Nunavut says.
“Referrals have not been suspended, and the boarding home continues to operate as usual. At this time, there is no directive to rebook or postpone medical travel appointments,” the GN said Thursday in a news release.
Manitoba Wildfire Service continues to respond to 27 active wildfires, and the majority of the province is under “extreme fire danger” with firefighters and members of the Canadian Armed Forces having been brought in from other jurisdictions.
The Manitoba government declared a 30-day state of emergency on May 28 because of the wildfires, a Maniotba government news release said.
Many Nunavummiut, especially in the Kivalliq region, use Winnipeg medical facilities.
In cases when Winnipeg boarding homes reach capacity, Nuanvut medical travellers can use hotel accommodations, but due to the fires and evacuations, hotel availability could be limited, the GN said.
Even though the boarding homes are not currently at capacity, the Nuanvut government is continuing to monitor the situation, the release said.
The GN urges Nunavummiut to keep up with their updates on the wildfires in the prairies and their impact on the territories.
