Mike Gardener named to Order of Canada
One of the Baffin region’s most beloved Anglican missionaries, Rev. Mike Gardener, 75, was named an Officer of the Order of Canada this week.
Gardener, who as a 12-year-old boy was inspired by the story of the Scottish missionary David Livingstone, came to the Arctic from England in 1955 to serve as minister in Lake Harbour, as Kimmirut was then known.
Gardener later served in Cape Dorset, Pangnirtung, and then Iqaluit, where he served as dean of St. Jude’s Cathedral until his retirement in 1996.
